West House, Cranleigh School

Cranleigh School is located south of Guildford on a 112 Hectare site in the village of Cranleigh. The West House will provide boarding accommodation for an additional 74 pupils and associated staff. The sloping site requires 3m high criblock retaining walls to the front elevation with cut and fill throughout the site in order to tie levels in with the existing boarding house.

The structure is formed using reinforced strip footings on deep trench fill due to the proximity of large trees throughout the site. A suspended precast concrete ground and first floor slabs are supported on load bearing masonry throughout. Prefabricated roof trusses form the roof throughout with a steel portal frame structure required to support the vaulted ceiling to the Common room.
